The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, AIIMS Deoghar, is committed to integrating medical science with law, ethics, and justice through excellence in teaching, training, research, and medico-legal service delivery. The department provides structured academic and practical training to MBBS, MD and Nursing students, enabling them to develop sound medico-legal knowledge, professional competence, and ethical responsibility.

A major milestone was achieved with the commencement of Medico-Legal Post-Mortem Services at the AIIMS Deoghar Mortuary on 1st July 2025. The mortuary is equipped with modern facilities for scientific handling, preservation, and examination of medico-legal cases. The department also supervises Clinical Forensic Medicine services, including age estimation, injury documentation and interpretation, examination of victims and accused persons, medico-legal certification, and expert opinion.

The department has established a Clinical Forensic Medicine Training Centre and regularly conducts capacity-building programmes for faculty, residents, medical officers, nursing officers, and other healthcare professionals. Its state-of-the-art Forensic Medicine Museum and Forensic Anthropology Laboratory further support teaching, research, and forensic casework.

Future initiatives include an authorised embalming centre, OSCC nodal centre, toxicology and poison information centre, histopathology laboratory, and virtual autopsy centre. Through interdisciplinary training and outreach involving medical, police, and legal professionals, the department continues to strengthen the medico-legal framework of the region and the nation.
